We’ve completed the task that the Lord put before us almost a year ago.  We’ve finished the ministry portion of our journey to Honduras for 2015.  We’ve arrived safely in Roatan for a day of relaxation and reflection.  We will use the day tomorrow talking about, praying about and digesting all that the Lord did this week.  This day might look “vacationy” to some, but it’s a critical part of the journey to help us re-enter life in Florence, SC prepared to share the story of what God has done. Tomorrow I’ll blog one last time.  In that blog I’ll share quotes from across the team and a full list of everything that happened in the clinics.

But tonight, I want to take a few moments to publicly say how blessed I am to be the husband of Ashley Ellis Neighbors.  She and I have been partners in ministry for over 16 years of marriage.  Being able to travel and be on mission together is always an extra special blessing.  She’s not only the better half of our marriage, she’s so much more.  She does so many things to minister along side me (or be a pastora as they say here in Honduras).  I’m also grateful that we have family who understand our calling and care so well for the boys so we can be together.

Today Melissa Miller passed the Tuareg Cross to Ashley.  She talked about Ashley’s personality, giving nature, smiles, hugs, laughter and her servant heart.  I’m humbled to get to do life with my wife.  This trip was particularly great.  Ashley usually likes to play the background while I do the speaking.  But on this trip she was asked at the last minute to stand in for Nancy Gatewood to lead the church group devotional times each morning. Let me tell you…being the stand in for Nancy is no small task.  Nancy is a brilliant teacher.  But Ashley wasn’t Just a stand in…she stepped out of her comfort zone, prepared well and made these lessons on the names of Jesus come alive for us each day.  She used her heart for Jesus and her joyful personality to prepare us for each day of ministry.  Thank you Ashley.  Each day was awesome.  I love you!

The passage that stuck out to me the most today is one that I luckily got to read. Waking up this morning I had no clue where my paper was that said what to read every day, so I asked what I needed to read and I was told to read one specific chapter. After reading that chapter, however, I didn’t really feel compelled to write anything about it. I put my Bible down to think and my bible opened up to a chapter in Daniel which is where my sheet was so ended up being able to read the whole reading instead of just one tidbit.

My attention was first drawn to Isaiah 59 because of its subheading in my Bible, Sin and Redemption. As I read, I started thinking about how similar the things described are to how we live today. Its so hard in this time to find truly honest people, especially in media and politics, who aren’t trying to put their own spin on things or don’t lie just to gain popularity. In our own lives we sin and try to cover it up with lies that we think hide what we’ve done when in reality the lies are incredibly easy to see through. We all chase after sinful things and not a day goes by that we don’t think unclean or hurtful thoughts (I know I can’t at least). We search for things that will fulfill our internal longings but we don’t look towards the One who overflows all with His love. And anyone who tries to turn to God gets persecuted in one way or another.

Because of our sins, it was impossible for us to be in the presence of God and seemed like it would stay that way for eternity. God had no reason to save us and we were worthless to him. Because of His great love, however, He sent part of Himself to rescue us. It was a suicide mission for our future and He assigned His Son to the job. And since we had to suffer so long, He is personally going to punish all who oppose Him and His cause. He will make all know that He’s in charge and will be praised all over the world.

Something else that stuck out is that even though this passage is in the book of Isaiah, it tells of things that happen in the New Testament. It doesn’t exactly tell the story of Jesus, but it clearly tells of a Savior to come. The one that baffled me is how it makes a reference to verses that appear in Revelation. Revelation talks of a day when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord and Isaiah tells of a day when all will fear Yahweh.

It’s truly incredible how God perfectly works everything out and it is so apparent that he has a plan at all times. I have been in Honduras for the past week and there have been times when I honestly had no clue what was going on, but God always worked those situations out perfectly and the results are some of the most memorable moments of the trip.

So, It’s 1:30am Eastern times (11:30pm in Honduras).  The clinic house is still buzzing with beyond-tired people packing up trunks, counting supplies, and taking invetory.  It’s been a phenominal week and we just completed our final day of clinics.  Just to give you a glimpse of this day so far we’ve:

  • Seen 221 patients
  • Led a woman’s Bible Study for about 50 women
  • Led two Children’s BIble Clubs
  • Served at a children’s lunch feeding program
  • Loved on 48 orphans
  • And led 27 people to Christ!

That’s not everything that happened today, but that’s a FULL day of wonderful ministry.  Though I’ve been trying to get other people to blog each day, tonight no one but me has a moment to stop and write.  As I sit for a second to write out a few of these thoughts, I’m watching Mrs. Anita (our wisest team member) still standing and helping clean the kitchen.  She inspires me to serve better.

We’ll blog more tomorrow when we arrive in Roatan, but know that we are all doing well and have had a great journey together.  Pray for safe travel tomorrow as we drive about 3 hours to the airport and fly over to Roatan.
